What is Social Enterprise?
Social Enterprise is defined as any business endeavour with a focus on generating a profit, but with a secondary by-product that improves a social mission. We have been practicing social enterprise informally for many years, beginning with our woodworking business, gift shop and catering services. In recent years we have more actively pursued social enterprise opportunities such as a laundromat, consulting company and property management business.
Why Social Enterprise?
With Social Enterprise there is a declared focus on profit, meaning each endeavour is governed by the principals of for-profit business. Revenue from a sound business operation is generally regarded as more sustainable than fundraised dollars because of the ability to forecast revenue over time. This allows LCDS to plan into the future while lessening dependence on government funding. There is another advantage to Social Enterprise specific to LCDS. Although generating a profit is the first priority, most of our enterprises provide a secondary opportunity to fulfill our mission. For example, our catering, gift shop, ice creamery and laundromat all employ people with developmental disabilities, providing an important community role.
